If you want warmth and natural character, cedar shingles bring something that fiber cement cannot fully replicate. The variation in grain and tone gives each gable a handcrafted quality, and cedar pairs beautifully with steel siding, the contrast between natural wood and painted metal doing most of the design work on its own. Our Bothell customer added a cedar shingle gable treatment to their garage specifically to match the feel of their house. Cedar does require more maintenance than fiber cement in a wet climate, but owners who keep up with it find it holds its character for years.

Board and Batten

Our Covington customer combined a dark board and batten gable with warm-toned horizontal siding on the walls and contrasting trim throughout, producing a building with a layered, custom quality that reads more like a designed structure than an outbuilding.

Lap Siding

Lap siding in the gable is one of the most effective options for customers who want their pole building to read as a seamless extension of their home. The horizontal profile is familiar and residential, and when matched to the house in color and profile, the outbuilding stops looking like an outbuilding. Our Snohomish customer’s one-car garage does exactly that, pairing a gray-green lap siding gable with bold white rake trim and gable returns to match the neighboring house. We most commonly install lap siding gables in Hardie plank, which holds up well in Western Washington’s wet climate and comes in a wide range of colors.

Belly Band

A belly band is a horizontal strip that goes around the building, usually between the top and bottom. It adds a nice touch to the design and helps break up the height of the building. Belly bands also protect the bottom part of your walls from moisture and weather damage, which can help keep your building in good shape for longer. On taller buildings, the effect is especially noticeable. Our Stanwood customer’s shop with a loft is a good example. The belly band creates a clean horizontal break between the shingle gable above and the siding below, giving a building with significant wall height a composed, layered quality rather than an uninterrupted expanse of material. It is also one of the more versatile accent options on this list, pairing naturally with nearly any primary gable treatment.

Additional Design Choices for Your Building’s Gables

A gable treatment is often just the starting point. Several accent elements can layer on top of or alongside it to bring the overall exterior design together. Here are the ones we use most often.

  • Gable vents. A louvered rectangular vent at the peak provides ventilation while adding a detail that makes the gable feel complete rather than bare. Decorative versions with arch tops or more elaborate profiles can become a design feature in their own right.
  • Gable returns. A gable return is a short horizontal extension of the roofline at the eave corners that creates a classical cornice look. It adds architectural weight and a sense of craftsmanship to the roofline without requiring a material change, and on smaller residential garages, it can make a simple gable feel considered and complete.
  • Cupolas. Cupolas sit at the peak or along the ridge and combine ventilation with a strong visual accent. They are especially well-suited to agricultural and horse barn builds where the traditional barn aesthetic is part of the appeal, though they work on residential shops and garages too. We offer them in multiple sizes to suit buildings of different scales.
  • Rake board trim. Contrasting rake board trim along the roofline edges sharpens the gable’s outline and frames the treatment below it. It is one of the smallest changes you can make to a gable design and one of the more noticeable ones.
  • Fishscale siding. For customers with a specific architectural vision, fishscale siding is a distinctive option. The overlapping scale pattern has Victorian and cottage roots and works well on properties with older homes or more ornate architectural details. It is not the most common treatment we install, but when it fits the property, the result is unlike anything else.

Step 5: Materials Delivery and Construction

  1. Layout and Footings. We stake out the building footprint precisely and dig post holes to the depth required by your soil conditions and structural engineering. Getting this step right is what keeps everything square and level through the rest of the build.

  2. Post Installation. Pressure-treated posts are set into the ground or anchored to concrete piers, depending on your site conditions and what your engineering drawings specify. These posts are the structural backbone of the entire building.

  3. Framing. Horizontal girts are attached to the posts to form the wall structure, and roof trusses are set to establish the shape and pitch of the roof. This is when the building starts to look like a building.

  4. Roofing and Siding. Steel roofing panels are installed first to protect the structure, followed by steel side panels. All exterior metal is 29-gauge high-tensile steel backed by a manufacturer’s warranty.

  5. Doors and Windows. Overhead doors, entry doors, and windows are installed and fitted to your design specifications. Rough openings for any future additions can be framed in at this stage as well.

  6. Final Trim and Accessories. Trim, gutters, vents, cupolas, and any other finishing details are completed. We do a full site cleanup before we consider the build done.

Fire Station Pole Building Shop – Port Townsend

Pig and Goat Barn Enumclaw High School

Our friends over at Enumclaw High School needed a pole building to house their pigs and goats for the FFA and other student programs. After meeting with our PermaBilt® Building Representative they decided on this great design. We constructed this beautiful rustic red 38’x60’x12′ pole barn that features five of our 12’x12′ stalls. Another cool feature of this building is the partial loft storage space spanning 14’x24’. We are eagerly anticipating the long-term utilization of this building by FFA students in the years ahead.

When housing animals, you will need to think about storage. Animals can require a lot of equipment. You will need to ensure that you have enough storage space for all of your equipment. You may want to consider adding a separate storage room or building a loft above your stalls for additional storage space.

PermaBilt’s PermaStall line offers a range of customizable options for stalls. This ensures that animal owners can create the perfect stall to fit their specific needs. The 12’ wide stall front is constructed using black powder coated steel grilled front and a sliding door. This is also a 4’x8′ black powder coated steel grilled. The stall front can be further customized by adding a tamper-resistant black powder coated steel yoke to the sliding door, along with a black powder coated steel feed door in place of fixed bars. The stall front is not only durable and secure but also provides an attractive look to the stall.

In addition to the steel grill on the front of the stalls, all PermaStalls use tongue and groove 2×6 fronts that interlock easily, providing stability and strength. The stalls also offer a removable wall option, which allows horse owners to combine stalls with one another easily. The end channel on either side of the stalls makes it easy to remove and rebuild walls. PermaStalls are a perfect choice for animal owners who want secure, customizable, and easy-to-maintain stalls for various types of animals.

In conclusion, the successful collaboration with Enumclaw High School resulted in the construction of a versatile and aesthetically pleasing 38’x60’x12′ pole barn by PermaBilt®. Commercial Storage Pole Building in Lynnwood – Snohomish County

The City of Lynnwood in Snohomish County Washington needed a new commercial storage pole building that would be 50’ x 70’ for their maintenance department.

After reviewing their initial design, we assisted them in reworking some details of their proposed design to make it more economical and serve their purposes better. The result was a 48’ x 70’ building that had (5) 12’ x 12’ Commercial Steel Roll-up Doors with rope pulls, (1) 4’ x 6’8” PermaBilt Door with self-closing hinges, (1) 3’6” x 4’9” PermaBilt Awning with enclosed soffit over the PermaBilt Door. There at (3) 10” Continuous Flow Ridge Vents on the roof and bird blocking at the gables. The building was insulated with 2” MBI Insulation in the roof and walls. The customer also chose to have an 18” overhang around the perimeter of the building as well as 5” K-ling gutters on both eaves with downspouts in the corners. The South sidewall of the building has wainscoting for a distinctive appearance.

We were very pleased to work with the City of Lynnwood and assist in enhancing the maintenance department’s facilities to better service the citizens of Snohomish County.

Pole Building Maintenance Shed in Fox Island – Pierce County

The Fox Island Mutual Water Association needed a small maintenance shed pole building to be located behind their existing shop building in Peirce County Washington.

Our very helpful PermaBilt Building Representative met with people at the Fox island Water Association to help with the planning and placement of their building on the property. There were some challenges with regards to setbacks, access surface and some permitting questions that our Building Representative and Permitting Department worked with the jurisdiction to resolve. The customer wanted a 28’ x 34’ x 13’ maintenance shed across from their existing shop. There are (2) 10’ x 12’ and (1) 8’ x 10 raised panel non-insulated roll up doors with rope openers, a 3’ x 6’8” PermaBilt Door with self-closing hinges and stainless steel lock-set, 18” overhang around the perimeter of the buildings, a 10’ continuous flow ridge vent and a 2’ x 32’ white eave light to let in some natural light to the building. The building also has a 28’ x 34’ x 4” concrete slab with fiber-mesh reinforcement and sip-strip crack control.

The Fox Island Mutual Water Association was very pleased with their new maintenance storage building and how it complemented their existing structure.

Four Bay Garage Shop Pole Building in Port Townsend – Jefferson County

In Port Townsend Washington, our customer, the Discovery Bay Fire Department had specific needs for a 4 bay garage and shop pole building. We were recommended to the Discovery Bay Fire Department by a customer who loved is recently built PermaBilt building. A new garage and shop pole building was required to meet their existing needs as they had outgrown their current building.

After meeting with our expert PermaBilt Building Representative and working through design ideas and requirements, the final design was a 50’ X 92’ X 16’ to store all of their equipment and vehicles. We were able to perfectly match the colors for their new building to their existing building.

On one end of the building there is a 50’ X 28’ loft with an inside staircase. There are two 3’x6’8” PermaBilt Doors, both with self-closing hinges and stainless steel lock-sets and one of those doors has a 20” X 24” window. There are two 5’ X 4’ vented sliding windows with screens. The four bays in the front of the building have 14’ X 14’ Insulated raised panel roll up doors, and there is a 12’ x 12’ roll up door along one side toward the rear of the building. Tulalip Tribes Pole Building Warehouse in Tulalip – Snohomish County

Having done numerous projects for the Tulalip Tribes, it was no surprise when they came to us to construct a large warehouse storage building.  

This building had a 60’x202’x20′ center section with 2) 28′ sections on each side for a total of 46,632 square feet.  Having built over 21,000 buildings we’ve seen just about every size, shape and configuration, but this building was one of the biggest we’ve constructed and certainly something special.

We met with the representatives from the Tribe on numerous occasions to pin down this design.  The center section is 60′ clear-span and is flanked by 2) 14′ lean-to on each side.  There are also two interior walls on the 60′ length to divide the warehouse into separate sections.  The photos below show the framing, the finished exterior and the finished interior.  We construction the building shell and completed the exterior.  The Tribe had other contractors do the interior work as well as pour the concrete slab.  We were happy to be a part of a building that will surely be a part of the Tulalip Tribes for a lifetime.

Pacific Coast Pole Barn Building in La Push – Clallam County

In La Push we recently completed a building located right on the ocean. The beautiful views of the ocean are a perfect backdrop to a beautiful pole building. This building is 30’x72’x14’ with four large 12’x12‘ garage doors and will include enough space for everything our customer will need in the future.

Our customer is going to be hanging game inside the building so we added reinforced beams to ensure that the building can handle the extra weight. Inside we have framed a ceiling and an interior wall with full t-girts and house wrap that the customer plans on insulating in the future.

Rounding out the project are 2 doors with awnings, 18” overhangs around the entire building, gutters, ridge vent and gable vents.

Commercial Shop Office Pole Building in Redmond – King County

This King County commercial pole building houses the Vista Site Office and Shop for the Ames Lake Water Association in Redmond, Washington.  Our customer knew that building a pole building would be a budget smart way to get a lot of building from their budget dollars.

The process to come up with the design and coordinate the project with the representative from the Water Association was one which took some back and forth and several appointments to pin down design parameters as well as to source and incorporate some very specific needs from the Water Association – such as security enabled locks and specific personnel doors and windows. PermBilt would be building the shell of the building and the Water Association would be completing the electrical, plumbing and interior work.  The commercial pole building design needed to fit seamlessly into the residential neighborhood where it was located.  Our customer obtained their building permit for this project.  Permitting in King County can often be a lengthy process and this job was no exception.  

Once the permits were issued, and our customer was ready for the construction to begin,  our construction crews showed their skills and workmanship delivering outstanding fit and finish throughout the pole building.
