On the beautiful Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands, our customer reached out to us while planning the build of their dream home. With a property located right on the airstrip, they knew they wanted more than just a house. They needed a custom pole building to serve as an airplane hangar as well. We worked with the customer to design a structure that would not only meet the functional needs of aircraft storage. But also match the unique character of their property and new home. One of the standout features of this project was the installation of a rustic hangar door. This custom detail gave the building a timeless, one-of-a-kind look that blends perfectly with the island’s natural setting. It’s the kind of touch that turns a standard structure into something truly special.
Now complete, the hangar not only provides a storage space for the customer’s airplane but also adds incredible value and functionality to the property. We’re proud to have been a part of this unique project, and even more proud to see another satisfied customer enjoying their new space for years to come.
Here’s a look at one of our recent projects — a custom airplane hangar built in Eastsound, Washington. This PermaBilt Modern building is 44 feet wide, 36 feet deep, and 14 feet tall. It’s the perfect size for storing a small plane and keeping it protected from the weather.
The entire building, including the siding, roof, and trim, is finished in Matte Black. This gives the hangar a clean, sharp look that fits well with the surrounding area. It’s simple, strong, and built to last.
The hangar includes a 3’ x 6’8” walk-in door made by PermaBilt, with self-closing hinges and a stainless steel lockset to keep things secure. There’s also an 8’x8’ insulated overhead garage door with windows and a rope opener, plus a large 40-foot-wide framed opening where the customer will install their own hangar door. This wide opening makes it easy to move the plane in and out.
To help with comfort and protection inside the hangar, we added 2 inches of insulation in the roof. We also installed bird blocking at both gable ends to keep birds out. An 18-inch overhang runs around the whole building, helping to keep rain away from the walls. The building also has 5-inch K-line gutters and two downspouts to help drain rainwater away.
This hangar is a great example of how a simple, strong pole building can be used to safely store an aircraft. It’s easy to maintain, built with high-quality materials, and designed to meet the specific needs of the customer. Whether you’re a pilot or just need a strong, weather-tight building, this hangar shows what PermaBilt can do.
