A barndominium—or “barndo”—combines the rustic charm of a barn with the comfort of a modern home. Originally designed as metal buildings used for both living and working, barndominiums have evolved into a popular, cost-effective housing option that blends open-concept living with functional workspace, like a shop or garage.

An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a secondary living space on a residential property. These can be attached to the main home or built as a separate structure—known as a DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit). ADUs are ideal for guest suites, rental units, multigenerational housing, or even a private home office.

Our Building Process

Building a barndominium, ADU, or DADU involves several stages, from the initial consultation through final construction. PermaBilt guides property owners through each step so the building is properly designed, permitted, and constructed for the site and its intended use.

  1. Initial consultation and site visit: A building representative meets with you to discuss how you plan to use the building, review the property, and evaluate site conditions such as access, drainage, and placement of the structure.
  2. Custom building design: The building is designed around your needs, including the size, layout, roof style, doors, windows, and other features that will support how you plan to use the space.
  3. Engineering and permitting: The building plans are prepared to meet local building codes and permit requirements so the project can move forward with the appropriate approvals.
  4. Site preparation: Once permits are approved, the project is scheduled for construction and the site is prepared so crews can begin building in the planned location.
  5. Building construction: Construction begins with layout and post installation, followed by framing, roofing, siding, and the installation of doors, windows, and other building components.
  6. Completion: After construction is complete, the finished building is reviewed to confirm it has been built according to the approved design and is ready for your interior contractor to begin work.
